This challenge is about generating ideas to improve the NHS oral health prevention of gum disease leaflet. Ultimately, we would like to improve communication about self-care with patients.

Cover design

Apologies if this is now closed and I am typing this in the wrong place but I could not access the challenge on cover photos earlier. My initial reaction was the cover photo was fine/very professional depicting a set of teeth being examined but having given this further consider I can see what other contributors, such as Gavin Peterson, mean when they say a more realistic image, without perfect or cosmetically enhanced teeth, might be an idea. A more realistic photo

In my initial comments on the leaflet, I agreed with others that the photo is somewhat unrealistic, as it shows a perfect set of team. What would I replace it with? I would go for a photo that avoids air brushed images or teeth that have been excessively whitened or capped. It should instead show a set adult teeth, that have been well looked after (but not significantly enhanced cosmetically) with an accompanying healthy set of gums. Leaflet - one needed for younger people?

Does gum disease usually appear at an older age?  Perhaps gum disease is now showing at a younger age - how old might they be? Might it help if there was a leaflet aimed at younger people, what are the thoughts on this?  "Your teeth aren't the only things that you have to look after"

Realistic goals

I think the leaflet is informative however most people wouldnot be able to have teeth as shown on the model. I would prefer to see before and after images of problems to encourage people to have work done.

Added Bite

Instead of unrealistic expectations promoted by over elaborate and high cost dental treatments and products why not focus on basic Dental practices and promote them in schools and target early years groups and schools.  Early intervention and education of Health and Dental Care Practices and the benefits learnt at an early age can help mould and instil a dental regime that will serve well as the child matures and enters adulthood.  Government/health Department incentives and price/cost...
